sad.

i’m sitting in my living room right now watching the christian (kirk cameron & ray comfort) v. atheist (the rational response squad) debate on nightline.

it’s sad.

the christians are getting wiped.

i’m not going to lie. i’m kind of embarrassed and kind of upset at the same time.

if you don’t know anything about the debate:

the rational response squad is a group that is completely against religion. period. but christianity specifically. because of this, they have issued a challenge online for people to commit the ‘unforgiveable sin’ (which, according to some verse in mark, is denying the holy spirit). to do this you just need to post a video reply on youtube in which you say ‘i deny the holy spirit’ at some point.

upon hearing this, kirk cameron and ray comfort apparently thought that it would be a good idea for them to take a stand for the lord and defend him. before the debate, cameron and comfort said that they were going to approach the rational response squad in order to give them logical, scientific evidence, without using the bible, to ‘prove’ the existence of god.

however, what ended up happening was quite the opposite. the rational response squad bent the christians over and said ‘who’s your daddy?’

ray and kirk continually pointed to faith (and the bible specifically), not fact. there were very few times when they used any logical or rational thought at all. they did use the good ‘ole ‘if there’s a painting, there must be a painter’ argument, but sadly that just fueled the sqaud’s fire.

the problem here is that kirk cameron and ray comfort are not trained to debate using rationale. they’re trained to use scare tactics and emotion to ‘bring people to jesus’. there were a few spots in the interview where cameron and comfort were literally speechless. they had absolutely no response to the squad.

it was sad.

the problem with a debate like this (well, most debates really) is that there’s enough evidence to support both sides. granted, that definitely wasn’t shown tonight, but you get what i’m saying.

there’s as much scientific evidence to prove a god as there is to prove there is not a god. it just depends on which scientists you talk to.

everyone has their bias.

tonight, the squad demanded an answer as to why god has no creator, in response to comfort’s claims that ‘every creation need’s a creator’. to this comfort responded that christians believe that god is eternal, and that he has no beginning or end.

the squad later mentioned that the universe is infinite. it has no beginning or end. it has always been around. upon making this claim they then proceeded to rip into the christian’s ideas of god being infinite.

give us an explanation! they said.

why can’t you offer proof? they said.

do you see it?

both sides (atheists and theists) are generally talking about the same thing!

the only problem is figuring out what this ‘thing’ is.

is this ‘thing’ god?

or is this ‘thing’ nothing?

faith is definitely on both sides.  faith in god.  faith in science.  faith in authority.

everyone must decide what they believe. because it all comes down to belief.

i guess we’ll only know what’s true after we have kicked the bucket, but they obviously can’t both be true. it’s one or the other.

i’ve done my ‘research’, and i have come to believe that there is one god and he is the god of the bible.  i don’t have all the answers and i never will, but i’m open for discussion.

i will leave you with a quote by c.s. lewis…

how could an idiotic universe have produced creatures whose mere dreams are so much stronger, better, subtler than itself?… do fish complain of the sea for being wet? or if they did, would that fact itself not strongly suggest that they had not always been, or would not be, purely aquatic creatures? If you are really a product of a materialistic universe, how is it that you don’t feel at home there?
